The Dominican Republic shares the Caribbean island of Hispaniola with Haiti. Hispaniola is located in the Greater Antilles archipelago west of Puerto Rico and east of Cuba and Jamaica. This land of contrasts features towering mountains and rocky cliffs, cacti-studded deserts, rain forests, fertile valleys and about 300 kilometers of prime soft sand beaches. The colorful mix of Spanish, French, Haitian, and African influences add a flair that gets under your skin once you get a peak of the landscape and culture this half-island has to offer. The thrill of meringue and bachata, intriguing relics from centuries past, premium cigars, and world-class baseball await you. Possible activities include hiking through magnificent national parks, scuba diving, windsurfing, kite boarding, golfing, strolling down never-ending beaches, striking it rich at the casinos, sipping cocktails by the pool of one of the many all-inclusives and drinking a liquid party-booster called Mamajuana. Geography/Environment
The second largest nation in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles, with Haiti occupying the western portion. Situated in the heart of the region between North and South America, the country is bathed by the Caribbean Sea on the south coast and the Atlantic Ocean to the north. With a land area of 48,442 square kilometers, it is larger than the Bahamas, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, all the Virgin Islands and the entire French West Indies put together. The Dominican Republic is slightly larger than the Netherlands, and approximately the size of the US state of Maryland.
Activities
The activity selection is really dependent on which part of the country you are visiting. As with most Caribbean countries, golf, tennis, and the usual variety of water sports apply to some or all of the various hot spots.
Climate and Weather
The weather changes only slightly from season to season in the DR. Average year round temperatures on the coasts range from 25-30ºC (77-85ºF). Chillier temperatures can be found in the Cordillera Central mountain range (Jarabacoa and Constanza), where temperatures below freezing point have been registered. Showers are shorter and more scattered in Punta Cana and La Romana than in Santo Domingo. It also rains more up north (Puerto Plata and Samana) than in the south and east.
